Whether asked when there will be enough women on the United States Supreme Court, the late Justice Ginsburg famously replied, “When there are nine.” When I first began practicing law as an Assistant Summit County prosecutor in Akron, Ohio, in 1981, all seven of our Common Pleas judges were men. In 2020, all of these judges will be female. Is it reasonable to conclude that sexual prejudice in the legal profession is a thing of the past as a result of this change? Unfortunately, sexual prejudice still exists in the legal profession. In a 2018 American Bar Association study of 3000 legal professionals, 68% of female respondents reported being the subject of sexual prejudice or sexual misconduct. According to the National Association of Women Judges, roughly one-third of all judges in the United States are female, despite the fact that more than half of all attorneys are female. Women continue to make up only 27% of all federal judges today. There are now just a few female managing partners in the largest legal firms. Attendees will hear about sexual bias in the legal profession, why attorneys are afraid to disclose it, and how Summit County, Ohio, overcame that stigma to elect an all-female bench.

Philip Bogdanoff is a nationally known continuing legal education lecturer on ethics, professionalism, and other related themes. Previously, as an attorney, he worked for more than 25 years as an assistant prosecutor in the Summit County, Ohio Prosecutor’s Office, beginning in 1981. Before retiring as a senior assistant prosecutor, Mr. Bogdanoff fought cases before the Ohio Ninth District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court, including six death penalty cases.

He has written numerous articles on ethics, professionalism, and other legal topics and has taught members of a variety of organizations, including the National Association of Legal Administrators, as well as numerous state and local Bar associations, Prosecuting Attorney’s Associations, and law firms.
