AURAS is a musical sound exploration that is formless or indefinable in nature. These audio constructions may be moulded and manipulated with MIDI keyboards and controllers, including MPE (Midi Polyphonic Expression) technologies like the ROLI Seaboard or Haken Continuum, which can shape the sound per note while playing.

In addition to experiencing the curated sound world of the AURAS patches, the COLOURS environment may be used to build and customize new auditory environments. The simple assignment of sound shaping parameters to any MIDI sliders, knobs, or controllers simplifies and speeds up the creation of entirely unique performable soundscapes.

SOUND DESIGN ETHICS

AURAS’s sound universe is mostly composed of abstract and impressionistic textures and rhythms. It is influenced by composers’ and artists’ approaches that blur the lines between sound design, orchestration, and music. References include John Luther Adams, Ben Frost, Ingram Marshall, Tim Hecker, Ian William Craig, Machinedrum, and William Basinski.

This notion may be explored with naturally and expressively thanks to deeply designed MIDI control. Unlike a typical sample library, which provides a rigidly defined and static snapshot of a sound, AURAS allows each sound’s shapes and forms to be worked with in a dynamic and unique fashion.

As material for the sound design, a wide range of sounds were captured, with an emphasis on capturing performance and movement rather than a large array of multi-sampled notes. Strings, synthesizers, winds, field recordings, percussion, and other instruments were used as raw material, which was then processed using a variety of methods and effects to produce a sound environment ranging from gentle and fragile to full mayhem.
