I began like you and every other new grant writer…

So I asked her to show me, and you’d like I was asking for her last slice of cheese. It was evident to me that I wasn’t going to receive any of her cheese or secrets!

I was too young and ignorant to recognize she was concerned with JOB SECURITY……while I was concerned with having a bigger IMPACT on the young people I was helping.

I determined that if I was going to acquire this vital talent, I would have to do it on my own…so I dived head first into the process. I pieced together my first grant request from bits and pieces of material I found on the internet.

BUT THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM!

I wasn’t sure whether the items I was basing my proposal on were GOOD or BAD. But one thing was certain: this proposal was not going to be my Mona Lisa masterpiece… but more akin to my FRANKENSTEIN

I submitted a grant request for $25,000.00 to the Hogg Foundation in Texas.

I was ecstatic at the prospect of this money making a significant difference in the lives of the young people I was helping. A month later, I went to my mailbox and found “THE LETTER” inside.

I felt NERVOUS as well as EXCITED!

I hurriedly opened the letter only to find that it had been REJECTED! This was excruciating. But there was a ray of hope at the conclusion of my letter. The Foundation’s Senior Program Officer stated that she would be happy to meet with me to address the issues with my application.

I accepted her offer and quickly realized how many beginner blunders I had done. I never received financing from that Foundation…but that encounter was priceless. This time, I resolved to study grant writing the SMART way rather than the HARD way.

I enrolled in a Graduate Program to earn a Master of Business Administration in Nonprofit Management. My primary emphasis and concentration would be on figuring out how to acquire the MONEY! I did Grant Writing Classes and Fundraising Classes to complete up my education.

I believed if I could learn how to WIN MONEY, I’d be a tremendous addition to whatever firm I worked with…

I was correct.

I became a sponge, soaking up whatever I could about grant writing.

I learnt all I could about grants and eventually began submitting effective grant submissions that were FUNDED!!
