Nursing has never been easy, but the epidemic brought our experiences to a whole new level.
We’ve been praised as heroes this year, while dealing with a lot of pain, loss, and difficulty. Fortunately, our professional lives are returning to usual. However, this does not mean that the horrible events we witnessed have faded from our minds. Perhaps the bad moments simply keep replaying. For your own benefit. In honor of your coworkers. You know something needs to change, but you’re not sure where to begin.
Unresolved emotions can be exhausting. Burnout and compassion fatigue have been particularly severe, leaving many nurses emotionally and physically exhausted. Many of us are looking for solutions that go beyond self-care. If these sentiments are not recognized, they can lead to despair, anxiety, exhaustion, physical complaints, and even nursing suicide.
My objective is to disseminate this Preventing Nurse Suicide information to as many nurses as possible. I want to be able to initiate challenging talks and help to finding answers.
We all face enormous stresses, thus we need need to feel understanding and compassion for one another. We can create a built-in support system on our units and floors if we discover new ways to embrace and nourish one another. NOW is the moment to unite as a nursing family. I don’t want you to feel isolated in this battle.
Let us assist one another as a community throughout the country by sharing our common patient experiences.

Stephanie L. Shafer, RN, MSN, ANP-C, PMHNP-C, works in a large private practice in Lansing, MI, where she provides clinical services to children, adolescents, and adults suffering from psychiatric disorders such as ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD, and Personality Disorders. She has had a lot of success addressing these problems. This success has been primarily due to the establishment of a systematic model of therapy that involves a strong emphasis on clinical and background histories, identifying psychosocial stresses, and assessing past medical and psychiatric diagnoses (and treatment regimens associated with these conditions). This medical management method and paradigm are critical to the appropriate administration of psychiatric drugs to this group.
Stephanie has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including emergency medicine, primary care, and psychiatry, in a big metropolitan hospital, community-based practice, clinics, and private practice. Her move from primary care to psychiatry arose as a method of delivering appropriate treatment to a rising group of underserved mental patients.
Stephanie’s dedication to her field is palpable. She received her Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner credential and finished a post-graduate degree in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She is a sought-after lecturer, sharing her experience with interdisciplinary healthcare audiences around the country.
