Terada Kiyuki, Saikoshihan (Chief Shihan), was born in Nagasaki, Kyushu, Japan on March 20, 1922. The following is a quick timeline of major events in his life. Let us begin in April 1934, when he graduated from Minami Kushiyama High School and enrolled in Kaisei Junior High School, where he began his studies in Kendo.
June 1937. Terada Kiyuki, at the age of 15, wins the judo championship and is named the year’s best judoka. He was learning at the Judo Shihan at the time and became an uchi-deshi (inner trainee) of the dojo, and in July 1937, as a student at Nagasaki Prefectural High School, he competed in a school judo competition.
April 1940. Terada Kiyuki, at 18, enrolled in Takusoku University and joined the student karate club. He enrolled at Shiodzuki University in 1941, when he met Shioda Gozo. Terada Kiyuki studied Sumo with Akutsugawa Sensei, Judo with Sone Sensei, and Kasima-ryu Jujutsu with Osugi Sensei from 1940 to 1943.
The month was December 1943. Terada Kiyuki, 21, enlists in the army owing to the ongoing war and is ordered to enter the Air Force Academy in March 1944, where he worked until August 1945, when he received the official news (in Kumamoto) of the war’s conclusion. He returned to Nagasaki two days later, on August 17.
It is the year 1948. Kiyuki Terada, 26, arrives in Tokyo to work for Miyakoshi. He joined the military police in Yokogama two years later, in 1950. Terada Kiyuki began Aikikai training in the Honbu Dojo the same year, under the tutelage of Ueshiba Morihei O’sensei and Ueshiba Kissomaru Dosu.
1952 year. Terada Shihan, 29, co-teaches an aikido workshop with Shiodo Gozo for the NKK and 85 Tokyo police stations. Then, in 1955, he taught aikido to the Yokohama Police Department and at the Drake Summer Camp in Saitama.
July 1955. Terada Shihan and Shiodo Gozo founded the Yoshinkan style at the age of 33. 1957 year. Terada Shihan, 35, visits the Honbu Yoshinkan Dojo with US Senator Robert Kenedy and Prime Minister Nakasone.
1961 year. Terada Shihan, at the age of 39, departs Tokyo to teach aikido at a military post in Yokosko.
1967 year. Terada Shihan, 45, is in Japan on one of multiple trips to conduct an aikido workshop in Honolulu, Hawaii.
1990 year. Shiodo Gozo bestowed 9 dan (kyu dan) to Terada Shihan at the age of 68. He also earns the Saikoshihan Yoshinkan Aikido title. He is presently the President of Aikido Yoshinkan Seiseikai and Yoshinkan Aikido’s lone saikoshihan.
Every year on the third weekend of May in Kamakura (Japan), seminars for teachers are held under the guidance of Terada Shihan, where masters from all over Japan, as well as masters from other countries, gather.
