Kris Wilder’s Sanchin Kata: Traditional Training for Karate Power is an instructional DVD on Goju Ryu Karate’s foundational kata. The publisher is YMAA, and this is the first DVD I’ve reviewed from them. I must add that the production quality is excellent, and they put together a nice DVD package:

A portion of the film is taken outside in what appears to be a Japanese garden. That’s a wonderful touch.
The interior footage was shot in a setting reminiscent of a traditional Karate dojo. This isn’t required for an educational video, but it’s good to see.
The visual and sound quality are both excellent. Excellent work.
You receive samples from various videos they offer in addition to the primary material.

All in all, you get a lot of bang for your buck. Now for the review.

You will first be introduced to Sanchin kata, followed by a full demonstration of the technique. Kris then provides some background on the form’s history as well as his thoughts on it. This gives you the background knowledge you need to comprehend the video’s major subject, which is what follows.

The training material begins with a step-by-step guidance on how to create the proper foundation for this kata with your body. Kris has a companion who assists him by positioning each body component in the proper alignment and then demonstrating how to do so. More significantly, he suggests what to avoid. He discusses:
