Good parenting begins in the heart and then continues in the present by engaging children while their emotions are strong, such as when they are sad, angry, or terrified. The core of parenting or dealing with children in a professional context is being present when it actually matters. This presentation discusses ways to educate youngsters to comprehend and manage their emotional world. The Gottmans describe the five phases of the “emotion coaching” process to listeners throughout this discussion. This presentation is based on Dr. Gottman’s internationally acclaimed book, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child: The Heart of Parenting.

The Gottman FoundationJohn Gottman, Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, where he founded “The Love Lab” and performed most of his award-winning research on couple interaction and treatment. Dr. Gottman has spent over four decades studying marriage, couples, and parent-child interactions. He has written or co-written 119 published articles and 44 books, including The Relationship Cure, Why Marriages Succeed or Fail, and How You Can Make Yours Last, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child: The Heart of Parenting, And Baby Makes Three, and The Marriage Clinic.
Dr. Gottman’s research on marital stability and divorce prediction has earned him numerous national awards, including: four five-year-long National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Awards; the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Distinguished Research Scientist Award; the American Psychological Association Division of Family Psychology Presidential Citation for Outstanding Lifetime Research Contribution; and the National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Award.

He is also the co-founder and Executive Director of the Relationship Research Institute, which has developed therapies for couples who are transitioning to motherhood and for couples who have experienced mild domestic abuse.
