It employs quick shuffling footwork comparable to but quicker than that of the legendary Mohammed Ali, as well as low-focused straight leg kicks. These are paired with blinding, machine gun-like jabs, punches, elbows, hammer-fists, chops, and finger pokes. Because of the speed with which the techniques are delivered, as well as the sheer amount of strikes and kicks the opponent must deal with in a short period of time, opponents have a tough time fighting against the type of attacks carried out by a fighter trained in Splashing Hands. Unlike other traditional martial arts systems that are suitable for tournament fighting and other controlled sparring conditions, Splashing Hands is particularly modern in that it is tailored only for street combat. In reality, it is a pure street-fighting system. A streetfight should continue no more than 10 to 15 seconds. Splashing Hands is designed to fit inside this time window. It achieves its purpose by combining quick kicks to the knees and groin with a high-speed onslaught of various hand techniques. Many martial arts these days emphasize kicking at the head, chest, or other high targets. Once you’ve cut the opponent’s legs out from under him and he’s on the ground, it’s simple to kick to the head, chest, kidneys, or anyplace else in Splashing Hands. In terms of general combat strategy, understanding how to manage a fight from the start is a critical component of this approach. You make the opening move, forcing your opponent to react. Too frequently, the typical person believes that a fight begins with the first punch, forgetting the reality that in a combative scenario, your opponent has already began to attack you in his thoughts. His goals are revealed by his eyes, expression, and body location. Even if an opponent has not yet fired a punch or kick, if his face twitches, he alters his posture, or even if the wind rustles his brows, he has already made the initial move and you must burst into him. Students are taught in this context the importance of judging the correct distance between oneself and an opponent, judging the right angle for any given circumstance, and developing accurate timing. Because Splashing Hands is an infighting strategy, being close to your opponent is essential. Double blocks, single blocks, attacks, and clever rolling hands tactics all lead the opponent into an assault and throw him dangerously off balance. When the opponent attempts to retreat from the attacks, the Splashing Hands fighter closes the gap and sticks to him, attacking him with jabs, punches, elbows, and uppercuts. Once the opponent is knocked down, the fighter sticks to him and continues to attack until the opponent is subdued. Splashing Hands training begins with basic footwork, such as shuffles to the left and right, reverse shuffles, shuffles with kicks, 45 degree shuffle, close the gap, close the gap kick, and so on. The hand methods are then trained and synchronized with the shuffles. The feet move as though they are on fire. While the feet are moving, the hands jab, punch, and uppercut. To achieve the remarkable speed for which this style is known, one must be entirely calm, unleashing strength only at the last moment of contact with the opponent. One is loose and supple, like a bullwhip, and power engages just at the end. The pupil is constantly reminded that relaxation leads to speed, and speed leads to power. The learner learns to acquire the sensitivity of touch necessary to fight as near to the opponent as possible during each level of training, whether in the basic methods, the series of Browns, Advanced Browns, or the forms of the 5 animals, Small Cross, and Four Corners. Two key drills are utilized on a regular basis to polish methods and sharpen timing, but more importantly, to teach the system’s basic concepts. As in the internal arts of Hsing-I, Ba Kua, Tai Chi, and Hsiao Chiu-Tien, the learner trains as though he were confronting a highly competent opponent while practicing alone. In an actual combat, though, he approaches his opponent as if the opponent does not exist. His mind becomes empty, and his body responds as it has been conditioned to move. Splashing Hands Kung Fu is taught in southern California today using the same techniques and ideas originated at the Shaolin Temple in Northern China. This continuous link, symbolized by the counterclockwise spin of the Small Cross, produces a wide and unending circle of speed, elegance, and strength that stretches from Northern China to Master James NcNeil’s instruction. It was taught to the monks responsible for defending the temple gates. Splashing Hands, so named because the hands move as if shaking water off them, is admired for its explosive, high-speed hand and footwork, as well as its simultaneous attacking and defensive tactics. Historically, only a tiny number of pupils were taught this approach. Splashing Hands was never commonly practiced even after it was introduced to warriors who were not affiliated with the Shaolin Temple. Those who were aware of the system’s efficacy were hesitant to share their expertise with others. Due of the secrecy, it is uncertain whether Splashing Hands is being done on the Chinese mainland today. We do know that the style was introduced to Taiwan in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when it was taught to a select few pupils by a former nationalist army officer. You understand what to expect and how the overview fits into that tradition and way of training/instructing/application. This is not a DVD that will teach you how to control the Octagon or win Olympic gold. McNeil, by the way, comes from a legitimate lineage. From what I’ve researched, that is mostly a line of inner arts and healing techniques (sexual practices and Chi Kung). Because this is the internet, there will be much discussion and gossip about whether or not this is “genuine” kung-fu. Whatever. Check it out for yourself. If you don’t want to, don’t. Of course, the limitations of studying from a DVD come into play. That is true for every sport or combat skill. This is an overview, not the final word on omega teaching. If you want, you can download it; if you don’t, you may ignore it. I also enjoy DVD #9… That’s a decent (though not extremely difficult) session to attempt as an alternative to a standard fitness routine. Overall, I believe Splashing Hands is not as full or as powerful as other schools of Wing Chun (Gary Lam FTW!). That is not to detract from its value as a standalone system with valuable apps. It struck me as cold and straightforward. It was worth seeing for a traditional martial art, in my opinion. There are always fresh paths to investigate and absorb what is valuable from.
