All relationship therapists would benefit greatly from learning Somatic Intervention techniques. If the neurological system isn’t calm, there’s no use in talking. A threat is usually the source of a heated argument between partners. Their bodies prepare for defense by going on high alert. This barrier prevents them from opening up to their spouse and hinders their capacity to feel safe expressing their emotions. In this talk, I’ll discuss techniques that can help couples calm their nerves so they can get to the bottom of their problems and find workable solutions.

There is a great deal of emotional information that can’t always be expressed through words, but is “held” by the body. Participants will have the ability to recognize and respond to bodily cues indicating one or both partners are experiencing feelings of danger or discomfort. These methods can help people go deeper into the source of their misery, which words alone frequently can’t.

Deborah J. Fox, MSW is a licensed social worker and certified therapist in the District of Columbia who specializes in Imago Relationship Therapy and Sex Therapy. Besides providing professional consulting, she also provides solo, couple, and group psychotherapy. Deborah is a consultant and seminar leader in the fields of couple’s therapy and sexual health. Among the venues where she has discussed these topics is the Washington School of Psychiatry, the Greater Washington Society of Clinical Social Workers, the Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, the Integrative Sex Therapy Institute, and the 2018 International Imago Relationship Therapy Conference. Somatic Experiencing is an area of study for Dr. Tammy Nelson, who also contributed a chapter titled “The Mind Body Connection: Sex, Couples, and Somatic Therapy” to the book Integrative Sex and Couples Therapy. She’s really interested in bringing more intimacy and fulfillment into couples counseling by tapping into the couples’ underlying emotional needs.
