The Night My Life Was Forever Changed
I was giving a private session to two of my advanced students at my dojo one night.
A man had called and asked if he may come down to my school to look around.
“No problem,” I said.
He arrived with one eye and a few facial scars.
He wasn’t a “Arnold,” but he walked like a panther and looked like one.
He was definitely “in complete command.”
He was polite to me as a teacher, but he could have swept the floor with me if he’d wanted to.
He had all six 100-pound Muay Thai bags flying violently at the same time, and he literally raced up the walls! I’m not kidding.
When I confronted him with a pupil, he would “tune out” and go into “kill mode.” He seemed to be in another universe.
Needless to say, my pupils were terrified and pleaded with me not to let him join the school.
While most instructors’ egos would tell you otherwise, I recognized an opportunity.
When my kids had finished, I told him “You cannot join the school because you will frighten all of my students.
Will you, however, TEACH ME what you know? It is the most amazing sight I have ever seen!” So, every night when my class closed at 9 p.m., he’d show up and give me a private session until midnight.
It was excruciating.
It was excruciating.
It was the oddest, most unusual training I’d ever witnessed.
And, OH MY GOD, I LOVED IT!!
What I’d learned had completely changed my life!
He had no label for his fashion sense.
He never charged me anything.
He merely requested that I not reveal his name.
I never have and will never do.
I still regard him as the greatest instructor and combatant of all time.
