In a world of apparently infinite love possibilities presented by dating apps, our clients frequently become trapped in “low responsibility” intimate relationships that breed pessimism and anxiety.

They frequently appear in our offices, claiming that there are “no nice people left out there” or that it is “difficult to get a relationship started.”

In this video, we’ll take an integrated approach to understanding the origins and effects of relational ambivalence, as well as uncover clinical techniques to assist clients in identifying and managing their relational boundaries, so they may develop happier, healthier intimate relationships.

Alexandra H. Solomon, PhD, is a staff clinical psychologist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, as well as a member of the teaching faculty in the marriage and family therapy graduate program and a clinical assistant professor of psychology. Solomon teaches graduate and undergraduate students in addition to her clinical work with couples and individuals. One of her courses is the globally famous “Building Loving and Lasting Relationships: Marriage 101” at Northwestern University, which blends conventional and practical learning to educate students about fundamental marital difficulties such as intimacy, sex, conflict, acceptance, and forgiveness.

She also writes a blog for Psychology Today and is the author of two books: Loving Bravely: Twenty Self-Discovery Lessons to Help You Get the Love You Want (New Harbinger, 2017) and Taking Sexy Back: How to Own Your Sexuality and Create the Relationships You Want (New Harbinger, 2018).
