What do you do with couples that can’t decide whether to work on their relationship or call it quits? They are frequently unsuitable for standard couples therapy, but they are excellent candidates for “Discernment Counseling,” a novel approach to dealing with couples that our therapeutic models are not meant for. We’ll talk about the distinctions between couples therapy and discernment counseling.

William J. Doherty is a community organizer, educator, researcher, therapist, and author. He is Professor and Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program in the Department of Family Social Science, College of Education and Human Development, and an adjunct Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota.
